My name is Dorothy. I am seventy-three. My husband, Raymond, has been gone for four years. My son Mark calls me every Sunday at five, for exactly eleven minutes. His wife, Alicia, calls me “Mother D” in a voice as sweet as tea with something floating in it. When her name appeared on my phone that morning, I answered immediately, thinking someone might be in the hospital. “Alicia?” There was road noise, the radio playing softly, and then her voice—but she wasn’t talking to me. “Did you bring the folder?” she asked Mark. “It’s in the back seat,” he replied. “And the brochure?” “Glovebox.” I opened my mouth to tell them they had accidentally called me, but Alicia laughed. “Relax, Mark. She’ll sign. She signs whatever we put in front of her. Remember the flu shot forms? She didn’t read one line.” I placed my hand flat on the table and began writing. Raymond always used to tell me, “Dot, when it matters, write it down.”

At 7:19, Mark asked, “What if she asks to read it first?” Alicia answered without hesitation. “Then you take her glasses to get ‘cleaned.’ Honestly, do I have to think of everything?” At 7:21, I heard the name of the place they had chosen: Silver Meadows. Alicia’s cousin worked there, and apparently they could get a “family discount.” They both laughed. At 7:24, Mark finally sounded uncomfortable. “It just feels fast.” For one brief moment, I heard my little boy again. Then Alicia answered, “Fast? We have been paying for that house for four years.” I nearly dropped my pen. Nobody had been paying for my house. Raymond and I had burned the mortgage in 1998. I owned that house down to the last shingle. What Alicia called “paying for that house” was actually the forty thousand dollars I had given Mark and Alicia when the twins were born, so they could stop renting. Then came the part that made everything painfully clear. At 7:26, Alicia said that once I was “settled” at Silver Meadows, they would list my house. Their realtor friend Bruce supposedly thought they could get $180,000 for it. “That’s the lake trip, that’s the boat, that’s everything,” she said. Bruce had already been in my living room twice, supposedly “admiring the crown molding.” At 7:31, Alicia told Mark, “Let me do the talking. You just look sad. Can you manage sad?” My son quietly answered, “Yeah.” Somehow, that single word hurt more than everything else.

My daughter-in-law pocket-dialed me at 7:15 that morning, and she never knew I answered. For nineteen minutes, I sat at my kitchen table with my tea going cold, listening to her and my son plan, in painful detail, what they were going to do with me by Christmas. They were in the car, […]

[1

post-645","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
